Bernard (Benny) Dippolito, 95, of Elizabeth, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at the East Orange Campus of the VA NJ Health Care System, East Orange. Benny was a lifelong resident of the city of Elizabeth. He was a chemical compounder with GAF Corporation of Wayne for 45 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Middletown VFW Post 2179. Benny was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army. He was involved in the following battles: Algeria-French Morocco, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and the Tunisia Campaigns.He received the following decorations and citations: American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal. Benny was presented the Purple Heart by General George Patton.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Celia (Cistaro) Dippolito; his brothers, Anthony, Joseph, and James Dippolito; and his sister, Frances Michelewski. He was the cherished father of Lorraine Furlong and her husband Richard, dear brother-in-law of Cathryn Coppa, and loving grandfather to Christine O'Connell, Patricia Wenz, Richard Furlong and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at the Petruccelli Funeral Home, 232 Christine St., Elizabeth. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 from the funeral home, then to Blessed Sacrament Church, Elizabeth, where at 9:30 a.m. a Funeral Mass will be offered. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
