Edwin A. Pettersen, 93, a former Staten Islander and N.Y.C. Police Officer, died Wednesday at his home in Glens Falls, N.Y.
A Tottenville born resident of Staten Island for most of his life, Mr. Pettersen enlisted in the army and served as Sergeant of an anti-aircraft artillery unit during WWII, involved in the battles of le Shima, Leyte Gulf, Guam and Okinawa in the Pacific Theatre. A semi-pro baseball player in his youth, he was featured in the Staten Island Advance for batting .660 while playing short-stop for St. Claire's. The article was revived for the 100th Anniversary edition of the paper.
Several years after the passing of his first wife Margaret in 1983, Mr. Pettersen moved to Metuchen, N.J. after re-marrying. His second wife Sara Pettersen passed in late 2012. They were dedicated members of Centenary United Methodist Church in Metuchen. They moved to Glens Falls in 2005 where they resided at The Glen on Meadowbrook Road.
He is survived by two loving sons, Mark Pettersen and his wife, Joanne of Staten Island; and Ed Pettersen and his wife, Nancy of Chesterfield, VA and his son-in-law, Ed Moore and his wife, MaryAnn of Queensbury; and his sister Bertha Harvey of Florida. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call from 2-4 and 7-9PM on Friday, April 26th at the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. Funeral service will be celebrated 11:00am on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Queensbury United Methodist Church, Aviation Road, Queensbury. Burial will follow at Pine View Cemetery in Queensbury.
