Ethel G. Szabo, 99, of Elberon, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Kensington Court Assisted Living, Tinton Falls. Born in New York, NY, she lived in the shore area since 1952. In Washington Irving High School, New York, NY, she was a recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Service Medal for outstanding service to her school. She was a graduate of Flemington High School and attended Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, where she studied Home Economics. She worked as a children's librarian from 1957 until 1973 at the Long Branch Free Public Library. Ethel was a communicant of Saint Michael's R.C. Church, West End, for over 50 years. At church, Ethel was active in the Rosarians and the Older & Weiser Club. She was the first president of the Elberon School PTA from 1953 to 1956 and active as a Den Mother in the Cub Scouts.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Béla Theodore Szabo, in 1989, and her sister and brother-in-law, Marie A. and George Sayer. Surviving are her sons, William A. Szabo of San Diego, CA, and Ronald J. Szabo of Bethlehem, PA, as well as cousins living in Boston, MA, Atlanta, GA, and Hungary.

Visitation will be at the Hoffman Funeral Home, 415 Broadway, Long Branch, on Thursday, February 28, from 5-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, March 1, at St. Michael's R.C. Church, West End. Interment will be at St. Magdalen's Cemetery, Flemington, NJ.
