AGE: 88 • Somerville

George "Jim" Mason died peacefully in his sleep this past Sunday, March 17, 2013 at his home in Somerville, NJ surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1925 and graduated from Somerville High School and attended Rutgers University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 203rd Combat Engineers. He was in the 1st wave on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and participated in 4 other major battles including the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes, The Battle of Northern France, The Rhineland and Central Europe. Jim was part of a small group of U.S. Soldiers first to arrive and help liberate the Buchenwald concentration camp. He received the distinguished Croix de Guerre medal. Jim returned home to the Somerville area after the war where he lived and worked until his passing. Jim was employed by Elmer Brewer Heating and Air Conditioning for over 20 years as a sales engineer and then became a partner in Henry's Air Conditioning. He later worked at Air Co. and Whaleco, before retiring. Jim was well known and respected in the community and was a lifelong member of the Somerville Elks Club, was President of the Lions Club and a member of the VFW and American Legion. He also had his private pilot license and enjoyed flying. Jim enjoyed a good party, traveling, golf and being with his family, especially his 4 grandchildren. He spent many summer vacations at the Jersey Shore, but mostly enjoyed spending time at home taking care of his yard and pool where he entertained family, friends and neighbors.

Surviving, is his loving wife of 49 years, Lois; sons, George Mason and his wife Elaine of Tamarac, FL and Tim Mason and his wife Valerie of Somerville, NJ; daughter, Deb Mason Agostinelli and husband Mark of Chatham, NJ; grandchildren, Airman Timothy Mason of Cheyenne Wyoming, Mason and Will Agostinelli of Chatham, NJ and Sarah Mason of Somerville; Also brother, Tom Mason and wife Peggy of Naples, FL and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his father and mother, John and Josephine Miesowitz; his sisters, Theresa Miesowitz, Dolores Brooks and Irene Pittenger and his brother, John Miesowitz.

Visitation will be held at the Cusick Funeral Home in Somerville on Thursday, March 21st between 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 22nd at 10:00 am. Interment and Military Honors will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's name can be made to the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, LA (945 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA 70130) or The Community Visiting Nurse Association, 110 West End Ave., Somerville NJ 08876.
