George L. Young

AGE: 94 • New Gretna

George L. Young, 94, of New Gretna, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City, N.J. with his family by his side. He was born July 12, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA., to the late Emma and George Young and grew up in Easton, PA. After graduating from Easton High School, he joined the Navy and was stationed at many bases around the world. He was also stationed aboard the USS Arkansas and the USS Yorktown and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He was a CPO with HU-2 Lakehurst before transferring to Iron Mt., MI for Navy recruiting and then retiring from the Navy in 1957. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Assoc., Lakehurst, N.J., and a past member of the Toms River BPOE 1875. After retiring from civil service he moved to New Gretna and served as a Commissioner and Building Inspector in New Gretna.

George was predeceased by his wife, Doris, in 2000. He is survived by his son, George E. (Janice) Young, of Highland Mills, N.Y.; daughter, Maureen (Ron) Cranston, of Absecon, N.J.; grandchildren, Michael (Ute) Young, Brian (Swayzee) Young, Vicki (Andy) Bunchuk, and Randi (Josh) Akers, and great-grandchildren, Melody, Logan, Sophia Young, Joshua, Shane, Kyle Akers, and Sasha Bunchuk.

Wood Funeral Home, 134 East Main St., Tuckerton, NJ is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Mr. Young's favorite charities; Brigantine Marine Mammal Stranding Center, Brigantine, N.J., Humane Society of the U.S., SPCA of Atlantic County, Popcorn Park Zoo, Forked River, N.J., .
