George W. Hopkins

George W. Hopkins, 80, of Silver Ridge Park North, Toms River, passed away at his home, on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013. George was born in Newark on March 22, 1933 to Joseph and Julia Hopkins. He grew up in Irvington, where he attended St. Leo's Parochial School and Irvington High School. George was recognized as an outstanding athlete on Irvington's varsity football team. Following high school, he proudly served in the United States Army in the 11th Airborne as a paratrooper and continued playing football for the 188th Airborne. Soon after, George met his wife Beverly and they were married in 1959. George and Beverly built their own home and raised their four daughters in Newfoundland, NJ, residing there for 50 years. George was a Master Carpenter, operating his own company, Quality Construction, for many years. Known as a legendary bow hunter, George hunted and traveled to archery tournaments where he shared his stories of hunting with the famous archer Howard Hill. He made his own custom arrows, bowstrings, and tree stands and had an impressive collection of bows. George was a Charter Member of the Lincoln Park Archers. He enjoyed the outdoors with his family, teaching his daughters archery. After his retirement, George enjoyed carving walking sticks for hikers and even gifted one to President Clinton.
George is survived by Beverly, his loving wife of 54 years; his daughters, Nancy Hopkins of Bloomfield, and her companion, Stanley Depczek, Linda Hopkins-Weber of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sharon Coop and her husband Timothy of Kensington, MD and Pamela Lisa and her husband Joseph of Vernon; three grandchildren, Joseph and Matthew Lisa, and Evelyn Coop. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Farkas and her husband Andrew of Zephyr Hills, FL and his brother, Joseph Hopkins and his wife Phyllis of Normandy Beach, and many cherished nephews and nieces. George was a devoted loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed and always remembered not forgotten by all of his family, friends, and neighbors.
The Memorial Gathering will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River.
