Hartley F. Field

AGE: 92 • Whiting

Hartley F. Field, 92, of Whiting, passed away at Crestwood Manor on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014. Born on March 14, 1921 in NYC, he graduated from Stuvyesant High School in NYC in 1937. He attended the Cooper Union Institute of Technology in New York where he graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering. On April 15, 1944 he married Marie Baldwin and together they lived in Woodbridge, Avenel, Metuchen, Ship Bottom, and Manahawkin before retiring to Whiting. Hartley was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he fought in WWII.

After graduating, Hartley worked for Westvaco Products in Carteret and later retired from Merck & Co., Inc. out of Rahway, where he worked as Manager of Staff & Industrial Engineering for 36 years. Hartley was very active in his community. He was the past Master of Americus Lodge #83 in Rahway, past President of Central Jersey Shrine Club and Union-Middlesex County Chapter of American Institute of Plan Engineers. He was a member of Crescent Temple AAONMS, Bordentown, Ship Bottom Land Use Review Board, Charter Member LBI Chapter#3728 AARP and Ship Bottoms Civic Association. Hartley was a volunteer for SOCH Auxiliary serving 17,000 hours. He was most recently chair of the Community Service for the Residents Association of Crestwood Manor. He was also active in his Church's where he was Former Elder-Trustee of First Presbyterian Church in Avenel, Former Lay Leader of the First United Methodist Church in Beach Haven Terrace and recently a member of Community Reformed Church in Whiting.

Hartley is predeceased by his wife Marie. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Cornell and her husband Tim of Manahawkin, two grandsons Joseph McClue Sr. and his wife Nicole of Middletown, and Ian McClue and his wife Kimberly of Parlin. Also surviving are 3 great-grandchildren, Joseph Jr., Scott, and Coral, and 2 cousins John Brandenburg of Whiting and Francis Bessler of Westwood.

A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Jan. 11 at "The Family Owned" Carmona Bolen Home for Funerals, 66 Lacey Road, Whiting. A religious service will take place at 12 noon at the funeral home. Condolences can be sent to www.carmonabolenfh.com.
