Former Staten Islander Jean Vanacore, 80, of Jackson, a retired office manager and an award-winning ballroom dancer, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, in Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born Jean Markowski in Brooklyn, she also lived in Queens before moving to New Springville in 1972. She relocated to Jackson in 2008. Mrs. Vanacore was an office manager for Modern International Corp., a wire-products manufacturer in Long Island City, Queens. She graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School, Brooklyn.
Mrs. Vanacore won awards competing in ballroom dancing and polka competitions in the 1950s, including at the Harvest Moon Ball at Madison Square Garden and Roseland Ballroom, both Manhattan. She enjoyed visits to Atlantic City, traveling, cooking and playing bingo and board games. She especially loved spending time with her granddaughters.
Surviving are her daughters, Christine Tumminaro and Lisa Erickson; two granddaughters, and her former husband of 34 years, Michael Vanacore.
The funeral service was at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 in the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville. Arrangements include cremation.
