Joan Carter Evelyn

AGE: 62 • Plainfield

Joan Carter Evelyn, 62, passed away at her home on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012. Born June 17, 1949 in Newark, New Jersey to Franklin Joseph and Lillian Mae Carter. She was raised in Westfield, NJ and attended Westfield Senior High School. She went on to attend Central State College and earned her degree in elementary education from Jersey City College. After graduating, she married the love of her life Gregory L. Evelyn Sr. on December 5, 1970. She was a dedicated teacher for 38 years (retired 2010) at Washington Community School in Plainfield, NJ. She loved each of her students as if they were her own. She sought spiritual refuge at North Stelton's AME Church in Piscataway, NJ where she was active in the women's choir. As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Theta Phi Omega Chapter for 26 years, she served in many roles and was the true embodiment of sisterhood and service.

Joan Carter Evelyn was predeceased by her sister, Jean Estelle Carter. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Gregory L. Evelyn Sr.; daughter, Dr. Monique Nicole Evelyn, and son, Gregory L. Evelyn Jr. She is also survived by her nephew, Glenn A. Miller and his wife Justine Miller and her beloved grandniece, Desirae Monique Miller as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The wake will be held on Friday, January 6th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, NJ 07023. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 7th at 10AM at North Stelton AME Church at 123 Craig Avenue, Piscataway NJ 08854. I wanted to write and tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I want to express my heartfelt sympathy. Mrs. Evelyn was such a wonderful woman and teacher, and so many people will miss her. She was my mentor at Washington Community School on my first year of teaching. I learned so many beautiful things from her.
