John Czirjak, Sr.

AGE: 97 • Fords

John Czirjak, Sr., 97, of Fords, passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at Aristacare at Cedar Oaks in South Plainfield. Mr. Czirjak was born in Coatesville, PA to the late John and the late Julia Boldag Czirjak and had lived the last eighty-three years in Fords. Coming to NJ around the age of fourteen, he made his own way doing many jobs, foundry work, ice delivery man, and mechanical work. During WWII, serving his Country Stateside in tne private sector, he proudly recalls the days where he quickly became a crew chief mechanic at Linden Ford Motor Plant, overseeing the production of the Grumman Hellcat fighter planes which serviced the principle carrier-based fighters that America had in the Pacific War. After the war ended, he owned a trucking business right on Pitman Avenue for a few years. Then later, John operated and owned Jay's Community Service (Mobil Station) on King George Rd. in Fords from 1951 to 1982 when he "retired," though his many loyal customers sought him out and he continued to do what he loved, mechanical work, out of his home garage for another ten years before he officially retired. He was a member of the Fords Keasbey Senior Citizens Club. A member of "The Greatest Generation," he saw a lot during his lifetime, The one-room Schoolhouse where he graduated the eighth-grade, a horse-and buggy the family owned, which evenually got replaced by the Model T (where his love of mechanics most likely began), The Great Depression, and the Prohibition Era. He believed in hard work and loyalty with a handshake (your word was good enough), and he also enjoyed watching golf, dirt stock car races at Flemington (also, NASCAR), and most of all NFL football games which he enjoyed betting on with his grandson, Dann Claudon, every year! He also enjoyed going to the casino, playing the lottery, Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes, and watching the stock market Exchange with a passion (seeing it go from 600 to close to 17,000 points). He was a man of simple pleasures in life and always believed in his Country and loved it with all his heart.

John was predeceased by a brother, Alexander Czirjak, and a sister, Julia Colyer. John is survived by his beloved wife, of fifty-eight years, Dorothy; a son, John Michael and his wife, Joan Czirjak, of Fords; his three daughters, Angelina Claudon of Sun City West, AZ, Shirley Czirjak of Fords, Theresa Czirjak of Fords; his sister, Mary Czirjak of West Chester, PA; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews and godchildren.
