John Patrick Crappse, 79, of Spotswood, died Friday, September 20, 2013 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.

Born and raised in Newark, John lived in Old Bridge for 19 years before settling in Spotswood in 1985. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church where, for many years, he served as an usher for the Sunday 12:00 Mass. John was also a member of the Saint Thomas the Apostle Knights of Columbus, Council 4815 of Old Bridge. He worked as a machinist for the former Western Electric Company of Kearny for 32 years, retiring in the early 80's. Thereafter, he worked part-time for the South Brunswick Twp. Board of Education and then for Aqua-Dent Labs, finally retiring in 2010. He was an avid science, history and movie buff and he enjoyed socializing with his friends in Clearwater Village. Some of John's favorite pastimes included bowling and following his favorite team, the NY Mets. But most of all, John loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

Predeceased by six siblings, he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline Crappse of Spotswood; his children, Paula Buttitta of Monroe Twp., John Lawrence and his wife Elaine, of Tampa, FL and, Michele Grogan and her husband Kenneth, of Eastampton; his sister, Patricia Lepre and his brother, Walter Crappse, both of Toms River; five grandchildren, Lauren Banos, Jenna O'Connor, Alexa Buttitta and Kelly and Shannon Grogan, and; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Banos and Kennedy O'Connor.

Funeral services will begin at 9:15 AM, Thursday, from Spotswood Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Spotswood, followed by a 10:15 AM Mass of Christian Burial from Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. A committal service will take place at Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick, prior to a private cremation. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
