AGE: 84 • Paterson
Mrs. Katharina "Katie" Bach died at home on March 4th, 2013 after a lengthy illness at the age of 84. She was the wife of the late Alvin Bach of Somerset and the daughter of the late Katharina Buechler. She is survived by numerous friends and family both in the United States and in Germany.
As a young girl she and her family were imprisoned in a Russian concentration camp in Yugoslavia following the end of World War II. Her father died in a Siberian prison but she and her mother managed to escape from the camp. Disguised as a boy, she and her mother spent several months walking out of Yugoslavia, into Austria, and eventually into Germany where they were united with family.
At the age of 24 she immigrated to the United States settling in Paterson, New Jersey. She obtained a job as a seamstress where she worked during the day and attended school at night to learn English. She met her future husband at the German American club in New Brunswick and they married in 1958.
Mr. Alvin Bach passed away in March of 2010. They had no children.
Katie worked in the retail fashion industry developing experience and knowledge and eventually became a buyer and then manager for the Corvette stores. After leaving Corvettes, she used her knowledge of retail sales and her keen eye for fashion to open her own successful boutiques in Kendall Park and in Princeton. Everyone who knew Katie knew she was never out of fashion and always the epitome of style, elegance and glamour. She sponsored and modeled in many fashion shows in the Princeton area and also was a judge for the Mrs. New Jersey Pageant.
Katie was an avid animal lover, a great walker, an accomplished cook and a seasoned gardener. She will be missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at the Gleason funeral home in Somerset on Saturday, March 30th from 11am - 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Echo Dogs White Shepard Rescue, PO Box 16199, Hooksett, NH 03106 or www.saveuspets.org PO Box 7961, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702
