Marianne A. Longstreet
AGE: 93 • North Plainfield
Marianne Stefanie Adler Longstreet, 93, died peacefully on December 23, 2012 at her home at the Arbor Glen Holly Center in Bridgewater, N.J. She was born on January 30, 1919 in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of Dr. Julius and Stephanie P. Adler. Following the death of her father and the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938, she and her mother and sister immigrated to New York City in early 1939. She was granted US citizenship in 1944. For 27 years she worked in New York City in management and personnel at the American National Standards Institute. After the death of her husband, Walter, in 1969 she retired to Manasquan to care for her mother. In 1970 they moved to the Yearly Meeting Friends Home (the McCutchen) in North Plainfield.
Marianne attended Rutgers University and became certified as an administrator for nursing homes in 1971. For 24 years she served as Administrator of the McCutchen Friends Home. During that time she also served on the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Association of Non-Profit Homes (NJANPHA) for the Aging. She took an active role attending conventions and conferences on state and national levels always learning more. She also served as a member of the founding Board of Arbor Glen, working during the construction and early occupancy phases of the new Quaker retirement community to create a very welcoming atmosphere. After her 24 years managing the McCutchen she retired. She stayed very active serving as a volunteer at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center twice a week and continued to serve on the Arbor Glen, McCutchen Boards and Committees. Marianne became a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1941, first at 15th Street Monthly Meeting where she taught First Day School and where she was married to Walter A. Longstreet of Manasquan Monthly Meeting. She became a member of that meeting for over 20 years and was very active giving much hospitality to friends in their home. After moving to the McCutchen, she moved her membership to Rahway-Plainfield Monthly Meeting where she continued to be very active until her last year at Arbor Glen (where she moved when McCutchen closed).
She was predeceased by her husband, Walter in 1969 and her sister, Gerda Adler Kenyon in 2003.
