Beloved wife and mother, 96 years old, Mary Hanoka (nee Mevorah) of Highland Park, NJ died peacefully on November 29, 2012 at the Francis E. Parker Memorial Home in Piscataway, NJ, surrounded by family. Mary was born in New Brunswick, NJ in 1916. She married Isaac Hanoka in 1934 and moved to Highland Park, where she resided in the same home for 78 years. Mary was the mother of four children; she was predeceased by her husband Isaac and her son Jack. She is survived by her three daughters: Susan Halpern and her husband Harold of Buffalo, NY; Beverly Spool and her husband Peter of Highland Park, NJ; and Eleanor Seel and her husband Tom of East Windsor, NJ. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. Her grandchildren are: Michael Lee Jackson of Los Angeles, CA; Jessica Sara Jackson of Holmdel, NJ; Rachael Jackson of Buffalo, NY; Rabbi Chaim Hanoka of Pasadena, CA; Gita Bronstein of Brooklyn, NY; Miriam Friedman of Birmingham, AL; Rabbi Yitzhak Hanoka of Brooklyn, NY; Chanie Pinson of Pasadena, CA; and Daniel Quiles of Chicago, IL. Mary is also survived by her sister Julia Saltiel and her brother Samuel Mevorah, both of Florida. Mary was a lifelong member of Congregation Etz Ahaim and active in the Daughters of Etz Ahaim Sisterhood in Highland Park.
Mary was devoted to her husband and family and had a caring and charming disposition. Mary worked as a seamstress for many years and worked at several bridal shops in Highland Park. She was known by all friends and family as a wonderful cook of Sephardic food. She loved to sing and dance, and often would entertain her family with traditional Sephardic songs.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 30, 2012 at Congregation Etz Ahaim, 230 Dennison Street, Highland Park, NJ 08904. Burial will follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Congregation Etz Ahaim or to the Martin and Edith Stein Hospice, 49 Veronica Ave., Somerset, NJ 08873. Arrangements are under the direction of the Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, 239 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ.
