AGE: 92 • Metuchen

Mildred Boxer, 92, of Metuchen died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, four days after her 92nd birthday. Mrs. Boxer was born in Bayonne, New Jersey to Meyer and Ida Blum. She graduated from Bayonne High School and married her husband, Dr. Leon Boxer, on May 24, 1942. After Leon returned from WWII, they settled into the community of Metuchen where they raised their three sons. Mildred was a founding member of Neve Shalom in Metuchen and was very active in the early growth of the congregation. She was a member of the Sisterhood and headed the committee for sanctuary stained glass windows which are still being enjoyed by the whole congregation. Mildred entered Douglas College in her later years and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1980, at the age of 61. She enjoyed and was well known for her cooking and baking. Mildred and Leon traveled to many parts of the world. She particularly enjoyed visiting Israel and visited there several times.

Mildred was predeceased by her oldest son, Dr. Robert Boxer, in 2005, and her two sisters, Ruth Roth and Harriet Achber. She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Leon Boxer; her sons Keith Boxer and his wife Melissa Haber Boxer, and Michael Boxer and his companion Kathryn McFarlane; grandchildren: Scott, Danny, Sarah, and Joshua; great-grandson, Julius; and daughter-in-law, Harriet. Mildred is also survived by two nieces: Shari Spivak and Linda Achber, and a nephew, Neil Roth.

Funeral Service will be Sunday, July 10, 2011, at 10:30 am, at Congregation Neve Shalom, 250 Grove Avenue, Metuchen under the direction of Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Avenue, Metuchen, NJ. Interment to follow at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer.
