Robert N. Maines, 81, of Matawan, passed away peacefully Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at home, with his family by his side. He was a retired carpenter. Robert was born in Newark and lived most of his life in Matawan. After retirement, he moved to Florida for 10 years before returning to Matawan eight years ago. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a lifelong member of the Washington Engine Fire Company.
He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Susan Margaret Maines, in 2001; and a brother and sister, Kenneth Maines and Helen Connelly-Avginone. He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, James Maines and Paula O'Shea, Thomas and Margaret Maines, and John and Diane Maines; four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Kevin Dalpe, Patricia and Stan Fudge, Nancy and Rob McCloskey, and Susan and Gary Petrizzo; seven grandchildren, Patrick Sharpe and his wife Shannon, Thomas Sharpe and his wife Jennifer, Jessica Fudge, Nicolas and Carlie McCloskey, Gary Petrizzo and his wife Amber, and Christopher Petrizzo; six great-grandchildren, James, Thomas and Ryan Margaret Sharpe, Stephen and Sarah Sharpe, Addison Petrizzo.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Waitt-Nelms Funeral Home, 501 Highway 79, Morganville. A Funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9 at St. Clement Church Matawan and a private cremation will follow.
