Thelma E. Stukes, 100, died April 30, 2013. Thelma was born and raised in Hazlehurst, Mississippi; she was formerly of Somerville for over 70 years before moving to Bridgewater in 2009. In her early years, she was employed as a lab technician at American Cyanamid. She then worked as a Home Health Aide in Somerville. In 1988, she was honored as Home Health Aide of the Year for her 25 years of outstanding commitment to her profession and compassionate care of her clients. She was an active member of the United Reformed Church, a charter member of the Negro National Council, a member of the American Legion Post 12 women's auxiliary, former Board member of the Community Visiting Nurses Association and also attended the senior citizen programs at the J.C.C. in Bridgewater. She will be sadly missed by all.
She is predeceased by her husband, David Sr., and a son, David Jr. and five sisters. Surviving are a son, Gregory L. Stukes and four grandchildren, Vincent Carrube, Jason and Jerome Stukes and LeighAnn Sullivan; four great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Services will be 10:30AM Monday at United Reformed Church, 100 W. Main St., Somerville. Interment will follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. Visitation will be 2 to 6pm Sunday at Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave. Somerville.
