ERNEST WILLIAM SMALKO
AGE: 86 PLAINFIELD
Ernest William Smalko, 86, died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Aristacare at Norwood Terrace in Plainfield. Mr. Smalko was born in Ecorse, MI, raised in Richeyville, PA, before moving to Plainfield in 1949. He retired as Sergeant with the Plainfield Police Dept. after 27 years. Ernie was a member of the VFW Storr-Richie Post No. 506 of Plainfield, a life time member of the PBA 19, and a member of the Plainfield area Chapter of Deborah.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Mascheroni Smalko; a son, Tim E. Smalko of Plainfield; and a daughter, Suzanne Weller of Fort Worth, TX. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Curtis J., and Nicole Weller.
Services will be 9am, Tuesday at the Scarpa Funeral Home, 22 Craig Place, North Plainfield. Burial will take place at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ. Visiting hours are Monday, 2-4 and 7-9pm.

Here is a reading I did when Chick passed away and I wanted to read it for Uncle Ernie but wasn't sure I could get through it: We thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday and the day before that too. We think of you in silence, we often speak your name.
All we have now are memories and pictures in our frames. Your memories are our keepsake, for which we'll never part. God has you in his keeping, we have you in our hearts. Though it's broken our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. For a part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
