VAN WORMLEY
AGE: 70 PLAINFIELD
Van Wormley, 70, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 in Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare's Hospital in Dover, NJ after a long illness. Van was born Oct. 30, 1939 in Plainfield to the late Van Luke Wormley and Anna Wormley Howell. He graduated from Plainfield High School and was an avid basketball player. Van was known for his "jump shot". He loved jazz and had an extensive collection of music. His favorite artists were Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, John Coltrane and Miles Davis. He also wrote jazz articles for the Village Voice Newspaper and covered jazz concerts. Van loved to fish and hike. He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church in Plainfield and at the time of his death was a member of Living Water Ministries in Plainfield. Van retired from the Plainfield Fire Dept. after 30 years of service in 1996 and was a member of COFFEE. He also worked for Lagreen's Awning Co. and the Plainfield school system. After he retired, he enjoyed going to the Plainfield Senior Citizen Service Center and spending time with friends.
Surviving are six children, Tonia and Lori Wormley of Plainfield, Parris Wormley of Randallstown, MD, Susan Shannon of Raleigh, NC, Steven Wormley of Trenton, NJ and Donna King of Glen Burnie, MD; eight grandchildren; a sister, Edith Taylor of Plainfield; eight stepbrothers and sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Collins of Los Angeles, Ca., Leroy Howell of Syracuse, NY, Althea Williams, Richard and Milton Howell and Naomi Jones all of Plainfield, Arthur Howell of Alexandria, Va. and Gloria Washington of West Paterson, NJ.; his former wife Mazie Mc Cadden-Wormley of Plainfield and nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service Sat. 10am in Calvary Baptist Church 324 Monroe Ave., Plainfield preceded by viewing at 8am. Interment, Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Arrangements by Brown's Funeral Home, Plainfield. Condolences may be expressed at brownsfuneralhome.net. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, CenterPointe II, Suite 103, 1160 Route 22 East, Bridgewater, NJ 08807.
