Nicole Surace Obituary
AGE: 18 • Milltown
Nicole E. Surace of Milltown, NJ passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013. She was 18 years old. Born in New Brunswick, she was a lifelong resident of Milltown. Nicole was a graduate of Spotswood High School in 2013. She was an All Star cheerleader for 13 years, and also with the Spotswood High School Varsity Cheerleaders where she was a past Captain. While in Spotswood High School, she was a member of DECA, where she competed with other schools in marketing skills. Nicole was a first year student at Monmouth University, majoring in marketing. She was a member of the University Community Service Club and recently helped serve Thanksgiving Dinner at a local shelter. Nicole will always be remembered for being full of life and joyful.
She passed away with her longtime boyfriend, Jeffrey Szatkowski of Spotswood. She is survived by her parents, Michael & Diane Surace of Milltown; a brother, Kevin M. Surace at home; maternal grandparents, Gary Stevenson and Sally Pohlman of Dingmans Ferry, PA; paternal grandparents, James and Roseanne Surace of Allentown, NJ; Aunts and Uncles, James & Laurie Surace, Steven & Nancy Surace, Donna and Tony Costa and Brenda and Keith Minahane. Also survived by cousins, Jimmy, Stephanie, Justin, Nick, Nicholas, Michael, Tara, Adriana, and Vincent.
The family will receive friends, Wednesday, 2-5pm & 7-10pm at the Bronson & Guthlein Funeral Home of Milltown. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Thursday 11am at St. Bartholomew RC Church in East Brunswick, NJ. Interment, Holy Cross Burial Park, East Brunswick, NJ. Nicole's Footprints
One night I had a dream.
I dreamed I was holding my little Nicole.
As I looked down upon her precious face,
scenes of the life she was to have flashed before me.
In each scene, I noticed how happy Nicole was.
I watched Nicole's life from taking her first step,
to walking down the aisle with her Daddy on her wedding day.
Before my eyes, I watched her laugh and play and cheer
and grow to become a beautiful, young woman.
But I also noticed that as quickly as each scene appeared,
each faded almost immediately.
As the last scenes appeared,
I saw myself alone.
I looked down upon Nicole's precious face again.
She was gone.
This really bothered me so I questioned Nicole.
"Nicole, I thought you would be with me forever,
but our time together was cut too short.
By the last scene I was left alone.
I don't understand.
Why, if I loved you so much, would you leave me?"
Nicole replied,
"My precious Mommy...
I love you and I would never, never leave you.
When you saw yourself alone,
it was then that I moved into your heart
where I will live forever, with you."

I am sorry for your loss and met Nicole a few times while she was doing a DECA project for Milltown Day. What a great spirit she had and inspired me. May the Lord watch over the family, relatives and friends. Peace to all.

Having lost a teenage son, Bill, in death, and a preteen grandson, Colin, we can at least identify with the grief of both Nicole's family and Jeff's family, as well as their many friends.
We share with you a short poem written by our friend (the late) Mary Wygant of Cream Ridge when our son died. We change the pronoun altering it for Nicole and Jeff, as follows:
"Never too young to be with God,
Though it be a sorrowful day,
For those on Earth left alone and sad,
To know (they have) gone away.
Never too young to be with God.
Just a little while ago
(They) came from God.
If God calls back the Loan,
It's surely better so."
Mrs. Wygant capitalized the word "Loan" thus making it a proper, rather than a common noun. This also reminds us that we do not "own" each other, but rather we are on loan to one another, to be returned to our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, when God calls us back. While we live on this Earth, we treat each other as priceless and valued treasures realizing that God, sooner or later, calls back those whom He loves even greater than our love can comprehend.
