AGE: 17 • Spotswood

Jeffrey A. Szatkowski, Jr. died tragically from an automobile accident on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 17. The love of his life, Nicole Surace, also passed in the accident. Born in 1996, he was a lifelong resident of Spotswood. A senior at Spotswood High School, he loved sports and the outdoors. He proudly wore the number 7 in football and baseball, and enjoyed kayaking, fishing, dirt-biking, and snowboarding with his brother, Ryan. He was full of life and energy. He was selected to the Heroes and Cool Kids program, an anti-bullying program at Spotswood High School. He was a true role model and he looked out for everyone.

Jeffrey was predeceased by his grandfather, Robert Lang. Surviving are his parents, Jeffrey and Kimberly Szatkowski; a brother, Ryan; his grandparents, Bernard and Irene Szatkowski of Morgan and Suzanne Lang of Helmetta; his aunt and uncles, Kelly and Chris Hricko of Fairfield, Ronnie and Tracy Szatkowski of Arizona, and Kevin and Jennifer Szatkowski of Sayreville; 6 cousins, Ashley, Bethaney, Madison, Connor, Ava, and Lila; and the "Fab 5," Nick Marinelli, Mike McCloskey, C.J. O'Connor, and Brian Thuring; and many, many more close friends and teammates.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 5 at The Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Jeffrey's Footprints

One night I had a dream.
I dreamed I was holding my little Jeffrey.
As I looked down upon his precious face,
scenes of the life he was to have flashed before me.
In each scene, I noticed how happy Jeffrey was.
I watched Jeffrey's life from taking his first step,
to marrying the love of his life on his wedding day.
Before my eyes, I watched him play football and baseball
and grow to become a handsome, young man.
But I also noticed that as quickly as each scene appeared,
each faded almost immediately.
As the last scenes appeared,
I saw myself alone.
I looked down upon Jeffrey's precious face again.
He was gone.
This really bothered me so I questioned Jeffrey.

"Jeffrey, I thought you would be with me forever,
but our time together was cut too short.
By the last scene I was left alone.
I don't understand.
Why, if I loved you so much, would you leave me?"

Jeffrey replied,

"My precious Mommy...
I love you and I would never, never leave you.
When you saw yourself alone,
it was then that I moved into your heart
where I will live forever, with you."

My wife Lynn and daughter Lisa were able to attend your services. I was not. My cousin Bernie is a part of our large family. It saddens me that you and Nicolle have lost your lives, but I am certain that you both are in the presence of Jesus and you both are again holding hands. We will continue to pray for your entire family. You and Nicolle, of course, don't need our prayers because you now have a joyous enternal life as Christians, but your Mom's, Dad,s, Friends and Relatives will need prayer. I'm now 72 years old and look forward to seeing you and I regret that I never really got to know your Dad and only was at his wedding and a party when you were born at Bernie's home. See you soon.

Pastor Bob & Sandy Turton

December 4, 2013

We can identify with the grief that both families and friends of Jeffrey and Nicole are suffering. We know what it is to lose a teenage son, Bill, and a preteen grandson, Colin Turton, to death so unexpectedly. We share with you a poem that was written by our friend and congregant,(the late) Mary M. Wygant of Cream Ridge, NJ, that she wrote in memory of Billy, but we change the pronoun here making it appropriate for Jeff and Nicole:
"Never too young to be with God,
Though it be a sorrowful day
For those on Earth left alone and sad,
To know (they have) gone away.
Never too young to be with God.
Just a little while ago,
(They) came from God.
If God calls back the Loan,
It's surely better so."

Note that Mrs. Wygant capitalized the word "Loan," thus making it a proper noun rather than a common noun, and also reminding us that we do not "own" each other, but we are all on "loan" from God to Whom we must ultimately return, either early or later, for as the Bible states: "Our times are in God's hands." Sincerely submitted in sympathy and prayer for all of you, from Pastor Bob and Sandy Turton.

The prayers and thoughts from the "little flock" at Fresh Ponds Chapel are on your behalf, the families and friends of both Jeffrey and Nicole. May this small flame of a candle symbolize the eternal love that will never fade for Jeffrey.
As we all are heart broken for your loss, we are merely standing in the shadow of your grief.
Your beloved son was surrounded by many who loved him. Let the amount of tears by so many, be a testament to the child you have raised. We are not good loving people without the best of examples from our parents.
In my heart and echoed by many,
I pray to God that Jeff, Kim and Ryan find comfort in any way during this most heart wrenching tragedy!
God Bless you all
Especially Jeffrey
