Marie T. Giarretta, 98, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Somerset Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Bridgewater. Born July 14, 1915, in Jersey City, she was the daughter of Peter V. and Rhoda Manna Cecchini. She had lived in Bound Brook since age 10. She attended Bound Brook schools and the Drake Business School, Plainfield. Marie worked for 40 years at L. D. Gidding Co., Middlesex. Hired as a seamstress and dressmaker, she advanced to Floor Lady (Supervisor), retiring in 1977. She was a devoted and very active communicant of St. Joseph Church, Bound Brook. She served as President, Vice President, and Treasurer of the church Rosary Altar Society. She sang soprano in the church choir for 43 years. She was a member of Lodge No. 1388, B.P.O. Elks, Bound Brook, for 10 years, and the Bound Brook Rescue Squad Auxiliary for 10 years. She worked on the Bound Brook Board of Elections for five years. She had been a member of a ballroom dance club years ago and had danced in public performances. She enjoyed playing piano and keyboard at home.
Marie was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Anthony R. Giarretta, who died in 1984; her son, Frank Giarretta, who died in 2006; her infant son, Anthony, who died two weeks after birth; her brothers, Peter C. Cecchini, Joseph Cecchine; her sister, Jennie Slahetka, and her son-in-law, Robert A. Briski, who died in 2006. She is survived by her son, Albert (Karen) Giarretta of Frenchtown; her daughter, Carol Briski of Whitehouse Station; seven grandchildren, and her beloved seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 9:30 A.M. Thursday, February 6, at Hagan - Chamberlain Funeral Home, 225 Mountain Ave., Bound Brook, followed by a 10:00 A.M. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church. Interment will be at Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway. Friends will be received at the funeral home 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 P.M. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made for Masses to be said for her at St. Joseph Church.
