James T. Petty, Sr.

AGE: 92 • Middlesex

James T. Petty, Sr., 92, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014 at the Veterans Memorial Home at Menlo Park in Edison. Born in Plainfield, James was a lifelong resident of Middlesex. James was a professional baseball player; drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates he then played with the Newark Bears. His baseball career was interrupted when he was enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country proudly during WWII. Later in life, James retired from the John Runnells Hospital in Watchung where he worked for many years as a supervisor. James was a former body builder and weightlifter. He enjoyed dancing and was a coach with the Middlesex Little League and Babe Ruth Leagues. He belonged to the Middlesex American Legion and was active with the Warren Seniors and Tri-County Seniors.

He is predeceased by his wife, Vita Marie (Sorce) Petty who died in 1998 and by his son, Theodore James Petty who died in 2002. James leaves behind his loving children; Vita Dworkin and her husband Darryl of Wall, Joann Rymer and her husband Gregory of Monroe, Toni M. Petty of Bedminster and James T. Petty, Jr. of Middlesex. He will be deeply missed by his cherished grandchildren; Nicole Rymer, Jacqueline Litchman and her husband Wayne of Somerville and Kevin Bobbitt and his wife Ronnie of Atlanta, GA, adored great grandchildren, Isabella and Sophia Bobbitt as well as his dear companion, Cathy Tamaro of Dunellen.

Visitation will take place in Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Road, Middlesex, NJ 08846 on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. At 7:30pm, Military Honors will be held followed by a family remembrance service. Family and friends are invited to gather directly at Lake Nelson Burial Park Mausoleum for an 11:00 am service on Thursday, February 6, 2014.
