Richard P. Melvin, Sr., of Fords, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014 at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was 77. Born in Avoca, Pennsylvania he lived in the Hopelawn section of Woodbridge, before moving to Fords 32 years ago.
He worked for United Parcel Service (UPS) in Edison for over 30 years before retiring in 1996. He was a volunteer fireman with the Hopelawn Fire Department and a Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He served in the Army National Guard from 1954 - 1963.
Richard is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bernice (Kotula); his son and daughter-in-law, Richard P. Melvin Jr. and Kristina of Milltown; his son Eugene P. Melvin of Fords; and his grandchildren Ricky, Clara, Alice and Bill Melvin, Hayley and Gabrielle Markowski, Vinnie and Becky Baker, and Gary and Teddy Howard. He's predeceased by his sister Jeanne Marie.
A cherished moment was when he participated in a scientific experiment with his son Ricky, nephew Eddie and grandchildren and family. Ein & Stein will live on forever. A special thank you to those who have always been a heartbeat away with help throughout his illness and life.
A Gathering for friends and family will take place on Friday, March 21st, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, 170 N Main St-at Riva Avenue, Milltown. A Memorial Mass will be Saturday, March 22nd, 10:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church, 233 N. Main St., Milltown.
