Edward L. Williams Obituary
Edward L. Williams

AGE: 88 • Edison

A teacher, World War II veteran, and loving family man, Edward L. Williams, Sr. of Edison, NJ passed away peacefully at 88 years on March 24th. The youngest of three children of Lilian and Frank Williams, Ed grew up in Lyndhurst, graduated high school in 1942 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. Ed spent the remainder of World War II in the Pacific Theater aboard an oil tanker, servicing combat vessels. He walked the streets of Tokyo the day after the Japanese surrender and then anxiously returned to New Jersey where he proposed to his high school sweetheart, Doris, on the platform of the train station. At his passing, Doris and Ed had been married for over 67 years.

A beneficiary of the GI Bill, Ed graduated from Rutgers University, ultimately with a Master's degree in education. After trying a few less satisfying careers, Ed eagerly and successfully settled in as an educator for over 35 years in the Edison Township School System. Ed was beloved by students and colleagues and, to the last, received letters and cards with regularity from inspired students.

Often described as "larger than life," Ed passionately participated in everything his community had to offer, from the Vestry at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Metuchen, Ozanam Men's Shelter, President of Pop Warner football, coach in the North Edison Little League, Member of the Middlesex Juvenile Commission, lifetime member of the NJEA, Past President of the ETEA, board of directors at Playhouse 22, and for 25 years the voice of JP Stevens Hawks football. Organizations were better with Ed's contribution.

Yet, nothing gave Ed as much joy as his four beloved children, Lynn Williams and Scott Frenkiel of Freehold, Kim and Randall Richards of Middletown, Edward Jr. and Laura of Vienna, VA, and Kris and Richard Aldridge of Bryn Mawr, PA; his fourteen grandchildren, Casey Williams-Ficarra, Cole Ficarra and wife Christina, Kelsey and Kyle Frenkiel, James, Matthew, and Christian Richards, Edward III, Lauren, and Kristen Williams and Henry, Elizabeth, Robert and Evelyn Aldridge. Ed is predeceased by his brother Frank Williams and his wife Ellen, his sister Louise and her husband William Joyce, brother-in-law William Bowen, and longtime friend Alfred Zampella. Ed is also survived by his wife and best friend, Doris; his sister, Alice Bowen and cousin Jaclyn Zampella.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 29th, 2014 at 10 AM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Metuchen. Cremation will be private.

Visitation will be Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave.(RT. 27) Metuchen.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Ozanam Inn Men's Shelter, 20 Abeel St., New Brunswick, NJ 08901.
