Joseph R. Dunn, 87, of Somerset, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at St. Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was born in Newark, was formerly of Metuchen where he had resided until moving to Somerset in 1980. He was a U.S Navy Veteran of WW II, serving in the Pacific Theatre, where he had been a ship's electrician on submarine chasers. He was employed as an electronics supervisor in satellite communications at Fort Monmouth, for the U.S. Federal Government for over 30 years, before retiring 35 years ago. He was a communicant of St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen and was a member of the American Legion Post 1000 in Trenton, and the YMCA of Metuchen, where he always enjoyed playing volleyball.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary (Kramarich) Dunn, his two sons, Dr. Thomas J. Dunn, and his wife, Mary Jo of Orland Park, IL and Edward Patrick Dunn and his wife, Christine, of Avoca, PA and his daughter, Diane Fichter and her husband, William of Satellite Beach, FL, his eight grandchildren, Erin, Carli, Andrea, Emily, Rebecca, Jason, Garrick, and Kaitlyn and his great grandson, Nathan.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 9:45 a.m. from the Flynn and son/ Koyen Funeral Home, 319 Amboy Ave. Metuchen, NJ 08840, followed by 10:15 a. m. Funeral Liturgy at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery Metuchen. Visitation will be on Saturday morning only, from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the YMCA of Metuchen, 65 High St. Metuchen, NJ 08840.
