She was the daughter of Samuel and Sadye (Rinder) Cohen. She grew up in the Bronx NY, where her mother would only let her roller skate with one skate at a time; despite this, she managed to live a full and rich life. She married Philip Falek and had two children but was widowed at a young age. After her children were in school, Joyce decided to fulfill her lifetime dream of becoming a teacher. She attended Hunter College Bronx (now Lehman College) while working at Young Israel of Bronx Gardens and raising her children. She received her bachelor's degree and taught first and second grade for over 20 years. She never stopped learning, ultimately achieving a Master's Degree plus 30 credits.
