She was the daughter of Samuel and Sadye (Rinder) Cohen. She grew up in the Bronx NY, where her mother would only let her roller skate with one skate at a time; despite this, she managed to live a full and rich life. She married Philip Falek and had two children but was widowed at a young age. After her children were in school, Joyce decided to fulfill her lifetime dream of becoming a teacher. She attended Hunter College Bronx (now Lehman College) while working at Young Israel of Bronx Gardens and raising her children.
