Robert L. Higgins, 83, of Cliffwood Beach/Old Bridge area, passed away, Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. He was born in Orange, NJ and resided in the Vailsburg section of Newark until 1958. He retired in 1980, after 25 years of service, as Chief of Operations with the Newark Fire Department. Robert was a life member and two term president with the Laurence Harbor Fire Department; a life member with the State Exempt Firemen's Association; and member of the NJ State Fire Chiefs Association; a member and past president of the Laurence Harbor Lion's Club; a member of the St. Joseph's Knights of Columbus Council; manager and past president of the Laurence Harbor Little League; Scout Master with Troop #92, Laurence Harbor; coach of the St. Lawrence CYO Basketball; coach of the Cliffwood Beach Soccer League; and manager and treasurer of the Mid-Madison Girls Softball League. He was a staff sergeant in the Army National Guard. He was a parishioner and head usher with St. Lawrence RC Church, Laurence Harbor.
Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joanne M. (Maguire) Higgins in 1994; and his brother, Richard Higgins. He is survived by his loving children, Thais Fairlie and husband Don of Fredericksburg, VA; Joyce Zarro and husband Michael of Springfield; Alison Ludwig and husband Bill of Howell; Jeanne Cook and husband Joe Schiettino of Manchester; and Robert Higgins, Jr. and wife Cathy of Jackson; his fiancée, Mary E. Guisti of Cliffwood Beach; ten cherished grandchildren, Eileen, Brian, Kelly, Kaitlyn, James, Emily, Anna, Zachary, Alexander and Sean; and one precious great granddaughter, Laila.
Family and friends are invited Monday, April 21, 2014, from 3-8PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ 07735; and Tuesday, April 22, 2014, 9AM at the funeral home, with a 10AM Mass at St. Lawrence RC Church, Laurence Harbor.
