Phyllis Black Greer, 86, entered eternal rest Tues. April 15, 2014 at home. Born in Plainfield, she was a lifelong resident and 1946 graduate of Plainfield High School. She furthered her education by attending Talladega College in Talladega, Ala. And West Virginia State College in Institute, WV where she studied voice at both colleges. She graduated from Newark State College now Kean University in Union where she received a B. A. degree in Early Childhood Education. She was employed as a teacher with the Family Development Daycare Center in Plainfield for 10 years, Cosmair Cosmetics in Clark for 8 years and at the end of her career with the South Second Street Youth Center Head Start program where she was the education coordinator. Phyllis was a charter member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Plainfield where she was the church soloist for many years, clerk of the session, deacon, elder and a trustee.
She was predeceased by her husband John Greer, Sr., three sisters Ruby Ford, Leola Black and Allean "Tootie" Akins and two brothers Alvin and Joseph Black. Surviving are two daughters Bridgette Ann Greer, Esq. and her husband John Scruggs and Keisha Greer; four sons John Jr., Stewart (Shelda), Rev Jason (Monica) and Joseph Greer, Esq. (Gina); 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; two sisters in law Juanita Sellman and Geraldine Randall and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Viewing Mon. 6-8 pm and Tues. 9am 10:45am in Bethel Presbyterian Church, 300 East Fifth St., Plainfield. Funeral Tues. 11am in the church. Interment, Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Arrangements by Brown's Funeral Home. www.brownsfuneralhome.net.
