Ruth Laura Simpson Hartman, 94, of Newton, died Saturday in the Harris Health Care Center at Bristol Glen. Born in Plainfield, Ruth was a lifelong resident of Somerville until moving to Bristol Glen, a United Methodist Home in Newton, in 2001. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Douglas College (Rutgers University) in 1941 and her Master of Arts Degree from Columbia University in 1944. A Home Economics teacher at Somerville High School for many years, Ruth was a member of the New Jersey Education Association. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton.
The daughter of the late Clinton and Emily Eick Simpson, Ruth is survived by two sons, John Hartman and wife, Linda, of Hopatcong and Robert Hartman and wife, Deborah, of Chesterfield, Virginia; one granddaughter, Erin Hartman of Guyton, Georgia; three step-grandchildren, Tiffany James and husband, Thomas, of Midlothian, Virginia, Chris Ursin of Hopatcong, and John Ursin and wife, Jody, of Byram; as well as eight step-great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service for Ruth at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Waterloo United Methodist Church, located within Waterloo Village in Allamuchy Mountain State Park, Byram. A repast will follow the service in the Church Parish House. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ruth's memory to Family Promise, PO Box 154, Newton, NJ 07860.
