Sophie Sonja Goushy, 91, passed away at Rose Mountain Care Center in New Brunswick on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 with her family at her side. She was born in Vintondale in the coal region of western Pennsylvania. She was the last surviving child of nine born to Joseph and Mary Anderson who had immigrated to America from Czechoslovakia around the turn of the 20th century. Sonja lived in Somerset, NJ and retired to Toms River before moving to Highland Park eight years ago. She was employed for many years as a Sales Representative for Sears Roebuck in New Brunswick. She was a congregant of St. Justin's RC Church in Toms River and a member of its Rosary Society. In her later years Sonja attended activities at the Highland Park Senior Center and at the Parker House Adult Day Care Center in Piscataway. She was known for her cooking and her cheerful disposition.
Sonja was predeceased by her husband, George Peter Goushy (1996). Sonja was a wonderful mother who was an understanding, caring and loving person and will be sadly missed by her family. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Fischer and son, Peter Goushy; her cherished grandchildren, Kenneth, Thomas and Margaret Fischer and her great grandsons, Henry and Theo Fischer.
A Memorial Gathering to celebrate Sonja's life will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 2-4pm at the Gowen Funeral Home, 239 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, NJ followed by a repast at a nearby Elks Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
