Iris Holmes

AGE: 87 • Medina, OH

Iris Holmes, 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2014. Iris was born January 25, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to parents, George and Mary (Kehoe) Schmitt. She married the late Clifford Harry Holmes, also of Brooklyn, on May 20, 1950. They were married in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Brooklyn. Iris and Kip were married for 54 years before Kip's passing in 2004.

Iris and Kip raised their three children in Uniondale, Long Island, NY. Iris adored her friends and family, and especially loved holiday celebrations where everyone came together. Iris was a loving mother and dedicated homemaker. She also worked at Alexander's in Roosevelt Field several years after her children were almost grown. Iris loved her job there, sharing her love for shopping and her discount on clothes with her family. Iris and her family enjoyed countless days spent at the beach. Dad (Clifford) loved cooking on the grill all summer long, growing tomatoes and peppers while Mom cut fresh lilacs for the kitchen table.

Iris was an exciting, fun, loving grandmother to all of her grandchildren. Days spent with grandma were the best; she would sit and play with her grandkids or spend time reading to them and sharing family stories. The time she spent with her grandchildren created amazing memories that will be forever cherished.

Family was the most important part of Iris' life. She always looked forward to traveling and visiting with her family. Her heart held so much room for everyone in her life.

After Iris and Kip sold their Uniondale house, they enjoyed time together living in an apartment in Glen Cove, NY. Wishing to be closer to their daughter, Carol, and her family, Iris and Kip moved to Neshanic Station, NJ. After Clifford passed, Iris moved to Medina, Ohio to live with her daughter, Nancy and family before finally moving to Medina Village Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, where she passed peacefully. Before she passed, she enjoyed her time at the nursing home playing bingo and bringing light to everyone around her. She loved her job as President of the Residents Counsel there, helping the residents and nursing staff beyond providing her usual laughter and happiness.

Our family would like to express our gratitude for the caring staff of Medina Village, and Hospice as well for taking such good care of our Mother and Grandmother. Her time spent at Medina Village was always so positive.

Iris' life is celebrated and cherished by her children, her daughters, Nancy (Robert) Rodman of Homerville, OH and Carol (Frank) Paterno of Tewksbury, NJ and her son, Robert (Deborah) Holmes of Pittsfield, MA. Grandma Iris will also be cherished and missed by her loving grandchildren, Caitlin, Elizabeth, Yvonne, Meagan, Molly, Matthew, Michelle and Monica; and her great-grandchildren, Ari, Elsu, Javon, Beren, Lucan, and Jaelyn; and her dear sister, Doris (Walter) Ferchland of Fredericksburg, PA.
