Marie D.L. McDonnell

AGE: 85 • Edison

Marie D.L. McDonnell (nee Verlengeri), 85, of Edison died on May 31, 2014 at St. Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Marie is preceded in death by her devoted husband Cornelius "Mac" McDonnell. She is survived by her loving children Michael McDonnell, Patrick McDonnell and his wife Karen O'Connell, Robert McDonnell, Kathleen Misdea and her husband Daniel; her cherished grandsons Daniel and Joseph Misdea; and her beloved sister Angela Verlengeri.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Marie graduated Battin HS and attended Cooper Union in NYC where she met her future husband Mac. They married in 1953 and after the birth of her four children moved to Edison, NJ. She began a career in education as a Related Arts Teacher in the vocational school system while pursuing a graduate degree from Rutgers University at night. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Doctorate in Educational Administration and retired in 1991 as Assistant Superintendent in the Middlesex County Vocational-Technical High School System. She took great pride in having had a purposeful profession, and treasured the achievements of her students.

In retirement she became active in many organizations including The Red Hat Society, The Edison Line Dancers, The Tri-County Line Dancers, and Our Lady of Victories Line Dancers.

Marie was an exceptional woman, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, a dedicated educator, gifted artist, prolific letter writer, and an avid dancer to the end. She had a passion for all the arts and sciences and instilled that love in her children and grandchildren. Always inquisitive, she forever enjoyed honing her sharp mind. Marie believed in living every minute of life to the fullest and was tireless in her efforts to help those around her. She was a compassionate, caring, and generous being. Once you became her friend, you were a friend for life. She will be sorely missed, and fondly remembered.
