Edward "Dixie" Penksa, 85, formerly of Carteret, died Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the Mary Ann Hale Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center, Edison. Born in Carteret, he lived there for most of his life prior to moving to Bradenton, Florida thirty years ago. Retiring in 1975, he was employed as a truck driver with Schwenzer Brothers Trucking in Woodbridge for thirty years. He was the owner operator of the Dixie's Tavern in Carteret. He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus R.C. Church, Carteret, the Carteret Veterans of Foreign Wars Private Nicholas Minue Memorial Post 2314, and was a Navy WWII veteran.
He is predeceased by his wife, Josephine, (Borys) Penksa in 2005; two brothers, Joseph Penksa, George Penksa Jr; three sisters, Pauline Penksa, Anna Racinski, Mary Zullo; a niece, Pamela Penksa-Franks, 2008, and nephew, Albert Zullo, 1995. He is survived by Goddaughter, Patricia Rumage and her husband Dr. Thomas of Sewaren; nephew, George Penksa and his wife Janice, of Toms River; niece, Gertrude Fox and her husband Roy of Staten Island; nephew, Edward Zullo and his wife Alfreda of Barnegat; great nieces and nephews, Jared, Catherine, Adam, Ryan, Amanda, Emily, and. Justin.
Funeral services will be Monday 9:00AM from the Chubenko Funeral Home, 625 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading, followed by a 9:30 AM Funeral Mass of Christian Burial from Sacred Heart of Jesus RC Church, Carteret with entombment to follow at St Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia. Visiting will be Sunday 4pm to 8pm at the funeral home.
