Frank D. Sweeney, 83, of Kendall Park, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at New Brunswick surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brooklyn, New York he has been a Kendall Park resident for the past 53 years. Frank was a United States World War II Army veteran serving in the 11th airborne division. Mr. Sweeney retired in 1997 with over 18 years of service as a teacher with the South Brunswick Board of Education. He was also previously employed as an advertising executive in New York for over 25 years. Frank also worked undercover for the FBI and testified in the trial for the Chicago 7, he was a member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Outreach Ministry, Past Commander of the VFW 9111, member of the South Brunswick Industrial Committee, Frank was an accomplished jazz and ragtime pianist, an avid painter and sculptor and an award winning poet. He was also longtime football, baseball coach in South Brunswick.
Son of the late Frank E. and Marie (Condon) Sweeney, he is survived by his wife of 54 years Catherine Jussel Sweeney, 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law Stephen F. Sweeney, Shaun F and Cathy Sweeney, Scott E and Cheryl Sweeney, 5 daughters and 3 sons-in-law Sloan S. and Raymond Scully, Sheila S. Goeke, Suzanne M. Danielle, Shevaun M. and Merrill Merritt, Sharon A. and Frank Danzi, 15 grandchildren Nicole Sweeney, Liam Merritt, Pamela, Christa, Jeffrey Goeke, Morgan, Deirdre Scully, Benjamin, Ethan Danzi, Mary, Sloan, Sean, Kevin Sweeney, Sarah and Madelyn Sweeney.
The funeral will be held 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home 616 Ridge Road at New Road, Monmouth Junction. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. St. Augustine of Canterbury Church 45 Henderson Road, Kendall Park. Committal service will follow in the Holy Cross Burial Park. Friends may call on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Outreach Ministry of St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, 45 Henderson Road, Kendall Park, NJ 08824.
