Rev. William T. McLaughlin Obituary
Rev. William T. McLaughlin

Reverend William T. McLaughlin was born in Erie Pennsylvania on January 16, 1941. He was the son of the late William and Marion McLaughlin of Erie. His sister Mary and brother-in-law Raymond Garthwaite also predeceased him. He graduated from Erie Technical High School in 1959. He attended Gannon University. Just before graduating from Gannon, Rev. McLaughlin decided to enter the priesthood. He joined an Italian missionary order, the Consolata Society for Foreign Missions. He completed his undergraduate studies at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut. He did his novitiate in Italy and returned to complete his studies at Catholic University in Washington D.C. His first missionary assignment was in Argentina. He felt the year in Argentina was a true representation of missionary life and told many stories about his experience there. He returned to the United States and was assigned to the Consolata Mission House in Somerset N.J. His duties included helping the Consolata Mission get established in the United States. Fr. Bill, as he is affectionately known, also was involved with the plight of urban youth in Trenton N.J. To better fulfill his constant and ardent desire to help those in most need, Fr. Bill joined the Trenton Diocese. Fr. Bill worked tirelessly to establish affordable housing in the city and in establishing vocational and educational opportunities for the youth in Trenton. In 2003 Fr. Bill received the assignment of being the pastor at Holy Spirit Church in Asbury Park, NJ. As was his nature, he worked eighteen hours a day accomplishing his goals at Holy Spirit Church. He merged four parishes into one parish, renovated the church in order to house an after school program, computer classes, English as a second language classes and to work with those in need of immigration services. Fr. Bill also loved his family and enjoyed spending as much time as he could with them, especially celebrating major events in their lives. He was also an avid Jazz aficionado, attending as many live performances as possible. He was truly loved and respected by all who knew him.

He is survived by Julie McLaughlin, Patrick (Diane) McLaughlin, Erie, Anthony (Barbara) McLaughlin, Puyallup WA, Melanie (Paul) Forquer, Canton OH. He is also survived by ten nephew and nieces, Anthony, Jason Imig, Patrick, Peter, Elizabeth McLaughlin, Isaac, Josh, Maggie Forquer Amy Atkinson and Melissa Burkhart.
