Karl R. Smith, 73, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 at Somerset Medical Center, Somerville. He was born Aug. 30, 1938 in Harrisburg, PA. to Harry and Catherine Lyter Smith. He was raised in Hummelstown, PA. and had resided in Dunellen since 1968. Karl was an instrumental music school teacher and taught in the Easton, PA. public school district more than 30 years before his retirement in 1993. He was a long tine member of the Union Village United Methodist Church in Berkeley Heights where he served as a trustee and a member of the Chancel choir and the bell choir. He enjoyed the fellowship of the Retired Men's Group of the church. He was an Army veteran where he used his talent as a trumpet player. He belonged to American Legion Post No.119, Dunellen. Karl was a 1956 graduate of Hummelstown High School where he participated in the music program and band and also found time to deliver newspapers during his high school career. He was a graduate of Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA. and a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfundia Fraternity. He was the husband of the late Brenda Erdmann Smith.

His family includes his Beloved wife Doris J. Varner Smith whom he married Oct., 23, 1976; a daughter, Rebecca Smith Diehl of Stockton; 2 step-children, Susan Kasman and her husband Lee, of Bridgewater and James Sawicki, of Knightstown, IN, a sister, Dolores Roberts, of Kentucky, nine grandchildren, Ashley, Kenneth, Joseph, Rose, Kathryn, Joshua, Charles, Korey, and Austin; 1 great-granddaughter, Amber. He was the brother of the late Mervin and Davis Smith.

A service will be held at the Union Village United Methodist Church, 1130 Mountain Avenue, Berkeley Heights on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 at 10:30A.M. Interment will be at the Mount Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Warren. Friends may visit the family at The Mundy Funeral Home, 142 Dunellen Avenue, Dunellen on Tuesday from 4:00P.M. to 7:00P.M. Memorial donations may be made to the Union Village United Methodist Church, 1130 Mountain Ave., Berkeley Heights, N.J. 07922.
