Gregory Joseph Purri, currently of Toms River NJ, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to parents Guiseppi Purri and Caterina Rosa Purri Servello. He moved with his family to New Brunswick, and then spent most of his life raising his own family in Piscataway until he retired in Bradley Beach. Greg was a Korean War Veteran, having served his country in the United States Air Force. He worked in his father's custom shoe fabrication business: J and P Shoe Repair on Easton Ave., before his own remodeling contracting business in Central New Jersey. The first time Greg laid eyes on his future wife, Eileen, at the shoe store, he said, "it was love at first sight". After repairing her shoes, he hid them, so he would be sure she would have to pick them up from him. Their first date was in Hoboken to see his favorite musician Frank Sinatra, and 42 years of wedded bliss soon followed. He was a member of many charitable organizations, including the Franklin Township Lions Club, of which he was a past president. He enjoyed visiting family, talking politics, reading, walking the Boardwalk between Asbury and Avon, and rooting for the Giants and Mets. He had a passion for building and spent his life marveling at the ingenuity of the construction of the Panama Canal. Greg was quick to make you laugh, always had his wits about him, and never missed a party- not even when as a young boy he had to climb out of his window to make his way without his parents being the wiser. Greg attended St. Peter's Schools, and was a parishioner at St. Peter's Church while he lived in New Brunswick. Greg traveled extensively with family and friends from China and Singapore to Europe and his ancestral home in Calabria, Italy.
Greg was preceded in passing by his wife, Eileen Maude, of Griggstown, NJ. Survivors include sister Veronica Archambault of Fayetteville, NC, brother-in-law Henry Gordon Bugden of NY, children Laura Cox and Joseph Purri in NJ, and Gregory Purri Jr in Orlando FL; grandchildren Melissa, Gregory, Heather, Michelle, Matthew, and Michael.
The family welcomes friends at the Boylan Funeral Home, 188 Easton Avenue in New Brunswick, on Thursday February 16, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Services will start at 9am Friday, followed by a 9:30 am Funeral Mass at St. Peter's Church in New Brunswick, interment to follow at Franklin Memorial Park, next to his wife Eileen, and Eileen's parents Benjamin Harold and Ethel Blanche Bugden. Please celebrate Greg's life by filling out an organ donation card. Also the family would ask, in lieu of bringing flowers, that you make a donation to a fund that helps to fight Diabetes or Kidney disease.
