AGE: 94 • New Brunswick

Joseph A. Catanese died Sunday, June 24, 2012, in Somerset. He was 94. Mr. Catanese was born in Barnsboro Pennsylvania in 1917, he moved to the City of New Brunswick and remained a resident of the city until his death. Mr. Catanese graduated New Brunswick High School in 1936. He was employed at PJ Young Department Store in New Brunswick from 1941 until his induction in the US Army in 1942. He returned to PJ Youngs after his honorable discharge from the service working at the store from 1946 to 1975. Mr. Catanese was also an employee of the City of New Brunswick from 1975 until his retirement in 1995. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. He served from 1942 to 1946 attaining the rank of Staff Sargent. Mr. Catanese was a communicant of Saint Mary of Mount Virgin RC Church in New Brunswick. He was involved in the Holy Name Society and other clubs associated with the church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in New Brunswick, the New Brunswick BPOE # 324, the New Brunswick and New Jersey State Library Trustee Associations, and the Catholic War Veterans, where he was a charter member of New Brunswick Post 405 and served as Post Commander. He served as the NJ State Commander and served as the National Commander from 2004 to 2005, a position of which he was very proud.

He was predeceased by his father and mother, Joseph and Frances Catanese; his sisters, Grace Catanese, Frances Venute and Rose Santisi and his brother, Peter Catanese and a niece, Frances Rose Venute. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Rocco and Josephine Catanese; his sister-in-law, Barbara; his nieces and nephews, Joseph J. Catanese, Frances Catanese Turowetz, Theresa Santisi Alvator, Felicia Santisi Rinehimer, Joseph Santisi, Louis Santisi, Maria Catanese Hurley and Bartbara Catanese Geib. He is also survived by 13 great nieces and nephews and one great great nephew.

Services will be Friday 10:00 AM from the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton Street, Somerset followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass at Saint Mary of Mount Virgin RC Church in New Brunswick. Entombment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
