Joseph Anthony Butera

AGE: 81 • Middlesex

Joseph Anthony Butera, 81, passed away peacefully, Friday, December 21, 2012 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Born in Oswego, NY to the late August and Sara Butera, he resided in Middlesex for the past 53 years. Joseph served proudly in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He earned his BA Degree from Oswego State University and his Master's Degree from Rutgers University in Education before teaching for 35 years for the Roselle Board of Education retiring in 1993. Joseph was a member of Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church in Middlesex, the Holy Name Society, and a member of the church's first RCIA program and Precana. He also was the former care taker at the Arc of Somerset County Camp Jotoni, he volunteered for the NJ Special Olympics, enjoyed fishing, woodworking and was an avid NY Yankees fan. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his sister, Jean Dowie. Surviving are his beloved wife of 56 years, Anna Woods Butera, his loving children, Joann Richter and husband Tom of Middlesex, NJ, Joyce Callinan and husband Kevin of Rumson, NJ, Michael Butera of Surf City, NJ, David Butera and wife Carmela of Haledon, NJ and Paul Butera of Middlesex, NJ and his cherished grandchildren, Amy and husband Ryan, Bobby, Patrick, Douglas, Anthony, Michael, Christina, Sarah, Emily, Brian and Steven.

Funeral services will begin 9:00 am, Thursday at the Middlesex Funeral Home, 528 Bound Brook Rd., Middlesex followed by a 9:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church, 600 Harris Ave., Middlesex. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Burial Park Mausoleum, Piscataway. Visitation hours will be Wednesday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Somerset County Special Olympics, P.O. Box 851, Somerville, NJ 08876 or the Middlesex Rescue Squad, 1400 Mountain Ave., Middlesex, NJ 08846.
