Shirley Duncan, 82, of Hazlet, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. She was born Shirley Balkum in Wilkes Barre, PA on April 30, 1930. After moving from Wilkes Barre, she lived in Keansburg and while living there, worked at the stands located on the boardwalk. On March 20, 1948, she married the love of her life, George Duncan, and their union produced 2 sons. Shirley and George moved to South Amboy and then in 1957, they settled in Hazlet in a house that was built by George. Shirley was an expert seamstress, creating everything from beautiful bridal gowns to clothes for her grandchildren. She was a talented quilter, making quilts for special people and she was a talented knitter, spending many hours working on her knitting machine. She worked outside the house for many years at Hazlet Pharmacy and Affordable Treasures, working until she was 82 years old.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Duncan Sr. in June of 1990, along with her parents, Earl and Bertha (Jeffrey) Lewis and her brother, Frank Balkum. Shirley is survived by her loving sons, George Duncan Jr. and his wife Diane of Hazlet and Alan Duncan of Cream Ridge. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, George Duncan, Michael Duncan and his wife Sandy, Amanda, Megan, Luke and Cheyne Duncan, along with her adored great-granddaughter, Anna Claire and her special nieces, Susan Balkum and Lou Ann Buy. The Duncan family would like to thank all of the people that have made a difference in Shirley's life and a special thanks to embracing hospice for their loving care.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3 and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4 at the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3269 State Rt 35 N, Hazlet. A prayer service will be offered at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Shoreland Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hazlet.
