Riccardo J. Bernabe

AGE: 82 • Barnegat

Riccardo J. Bernabe born January 25, 1931 died March 6, 2013 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He often said he was blessed to have had loving, caring parents who set the tone towards his approach to life. He was born and raised in Newark, N.J., a place and time which he felt was the best of eras. He attended Barringer High School, moved on to be a training sergeant stationed in California during the Korean war. Upon discharge he became a Patrolman on the Bloomfield Police Department. After serving nine years he became a hairstylist. He owned and operated three salons, the largest in East Hanover, N.J., along with two others in West Orange and Pt. Pleasant, N.J. After thirty six years in business he followed his life long dream and true love of entertainment. He loved to sing and he loved people. He looked upon himself as one of the luckiest men alive, being blessed with a beautiful wife who was truly a "diamond," along with wonderful children, grandchildren, and a great granddaughter who all returned his love beyond words. They all became his pride and joy especially in his later years. His voice was heard in the best of restaurants, along with his favorite expression, "Nice people come to nice places," which was his trademark. He often said that when the curtain comes down, "I have no complaints, I've been a happy man!". He felt life is a gift to enjoy to the fullest and wanted all to remember "It's nice to be nice." In retrospect Riccardo wants all his dearest family members and friends who have given him a lifetime of dreams come true to think of him whenever they hear a Sinatra song, to enjoy a good meal and hearty laugh, and know he is present with them.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Alice in 2000, surviving him are his children, Rick Bernabe and his wife Anne of Madison, N.J., Laura Stiles and her husband Mike of Barnegat, N.J., Lisa Bernabe of Malibu, Ca., Michelle Ebeid and her husband Waleed of Pt. Pleasant, N.J., and Michael Bernabe of Toms River, N.J., along with his grandchildren, Ricky, Joey, Alice, Gina, and his pal and partner in crime, Nick. He also leaves behind one great granddaughter, Ava, along with more friends and relatives who he has touched with his laughter and love of life.

Services will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013 from 3-5pm at the Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Hwy. 88, Brick with a memorial service at 4:30pm. Cremation was private.
