Mary J. Dempsey, 76, of Brick, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family. Mary was the youngest of 8 children born to Agnes and William Keenan. She was born and raised in Jersey City. Her childhood summers spent "down the shore" at Ideal Beach were lifelong cherished memories. She graduated from St. Michaels High School in Jersey City. In 1957, Mary met and later married the love of her life, Donald Dempsey. In 1970, Mary and Donald moved their family to their home in Brick where she lived for the remainder of her life. Mary enjoyed a long career at Lakehurst Navy Base. In 1999, she joined her husband in retirement, and together they traveled and enjoyed many wonderful trips. Mary was a proud and dedicated friend of Bill W. for 42 years. Mary's love for family, friends, the beach, reading, and pride in her Irish heritage defined her life. She was a wise and wonderful woman and will be missed, remembered, and loved forever by all who knew her.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, William and Agnes Keenan and her sisters Kitty, Pat, and Peggy. Mary is survived by her loving husband, Donald J. Dempsey; her sons, Donald W. Dempsey and his wife Lena, and Patrick J. Dempsey and his wife Donna; her daughters, Mary Ellen Lowcher and her husband Mark, and Eileen Odom and her husband Carl; and her grandchildren, Emily, Donald, Laura, Jennifer, Patrick, David, Kelly, Katelyn, and Timothy; and her great-grandchildren, Riley and Jack. She is also survived by her sisters, Ellen Butler, Anna McGrath, Rose Sadowski, and her brother, Patrick Keenan.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, 885 Mantoloking Road, Brick. A Matt Talbot Service will be held at 3 p.m. and a memorial service will be held at 8:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17 at Church of the Visitation, 755 Mantoloking Road, Brick.
