Lifelong Carteret resident Pauline R. Bergmann, the ever caring and loving teacher, went into eternal rest on September 24, 2013. Pauline lovingly taught at the Holy Family School beginning there in September 1968 continuing her instructional career for 20 years. Born Pauline Rose Prokopiak, daughter of Felixa Kalista and Stanislaw Prokopiak, on January 7, 1924 in Carteret, NJ.
She attended Holy Family Parochial School, graduating in 1939. She graduated with high honors from Carteret High School in 1943. Pauline attended N.Y.U. and M.C.C. for teaching certification emphasizing Psychology and Religious teachings studying there, achieving Catholic Christian Doctrine Education Certifications. After graduation she began working for the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark, until her teaching career began. During that time Pauline was involved with many activities relating to her Parish community.
She was a member and past president of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and over her 20 year service worked as the Regent of the Court Fidelis #636, serving through various chairs within the Organization, concluding as past Regents Club President. She was a member of the Blue Army and a coordinator of the Divine Mercy and Our Lady of Fatima prayer groups. She sung in the church choir. Remaining in truth to her beliefs, Pauline received catechist accreditation from the Vicar of Education, Monsignor Brembos in April of 1989. She was further prepared by the Rev. Edward Shallow, Pastor of Holy Family Church and began her service as a Eucharistic Minister in 1990. She was active as the Secretary of the Carteret High School P.T.A. and served on the Board of the Carteret Council of Schools there as well. She also served as president of Holy Family PTA. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ladies Auxiliary for a stint.
She will be remembered by her past students - "Who grew up to be fine young men and women, conscientious in their actions and beliefs, and their religious inheritance". Mrs. Bergmann, as the children fondly called her often stated "Parents love your children" and "they will do whatever is asked of them", her 'shining hour' was teaching them Religion…teaching children about God".
Mrs. Bergmann was the loving wife of the late Edwin G. Bergmann, a State and semi pro football and track standout. Pauline was the mother of two loving daughters- Diane Marie and her husband Anthony LoPresti, Paula and her husband Francis Cap, two grandchildren Francis and Spencer Cap. Survived by sisters-in-law Lydia Andres, Stephanie Prokopiak and Marge Prokopiak. Several nieces, nephews, and great niece and nephews.
Pauline is reposed at Synowiecki Funeral Home, located at 56 Carteret Avenue, Carteret, NJ. Visiting friends and family are welcome on Friday from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9 pm. Altar Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 2:30 pm. A celebratory Mass of Christian Burial is slated at Divine Mercy Parish, formally known as Holy Family Church; Emerson Street, Carteret, NJ is scheduled for 9:30 am Saturday. Entombment will follow mass at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Good Shepherd Chapel Mausoleum located on 53 Inman Avenue, Colonia.
