Alfred J. Pellegrino

AGE: 100 • Edison

Alfred J. Pellegrino, of Edison died Thursday, October 24th at Haven Hospice at the JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was 100. Born in Naples, Italy, he moved to Jersey City in 1922, where he lived for 56 years. He then moved to North Brunswick before moving to Edison in 1997.

Al was the owner & operator of the Al Pellegrino & Son Cake & Candy Distributor in Jersey City, working for 72 years before retiring in 2001. Beginning in 1943, he served in World War II as a sergeant in the Army 18th Airways Detachment 14th Air Force. He received an Honorable Discharge on December 15th 1945 and left with an Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. He was also a parishioner of St. Helena's RC Church in Edison.

His wife, Susan M. Pellegrino and son, Alfred J. Pellegrino Jr. both passed away in 1995. He is also predeceased by his sisters, Mafalda Strocchio and Mary Pellegrino. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Vincent & Barbara Pellegrino of Cedar Grove, and Anthony & Patricia Pellegrino of Shrewsbury; daughter, Gerri Fardin of Edison; sister-in-law, Rose Nese of Edison; 8 grandchildren, Vincent, Michael, Joseph, Christina, Jason, Danielle, Anthony and Matthew; niece, Elizabeth; and nephew, Nicholas.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 28th at 10 AM at the GOSSELIN FUNERAL HOME, 660 New Dover Road, Edison, followed by an 11 AM Mass at St. Helena's RC Church, Edison. Entombment to follow in Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 27th from 3-7 PM at the funeral home.
