"Beloved Mother, Grandmother & Great-grandmother", Dorothy Schurmann, of Colonia passed away Tuesday, March 18th at the Center for Hope Hospice, Scotch Plains. She was 84. Born South Chicago, IL, Dorothy grew up in Whiting, Indiana. After graduating from George Rogers Clak High School, she received a scholarship to Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana where she majored in business Administration and was a member of the Blue Crest and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Societies. She then began working as an Executive Secretary for Mobil Oil in East Chicago, Indiana. In 1953 Dorothy met Robert Schurmann soon after his separation from the service following his tour of duty in Korea. They lived briefly in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee before making their home in Colonia, New Jersey in 1963. Dorothy was a homemaker and volunteered at the Woodbridge Township Board of Elections as a Poll Clerk for 20 years and was a dedicated Volunteer for the Deborah Hospital Foundation for over 40 years. Together, Dorothy and her husband travelled extensively in their 50 years together, also enjoying their common interests in music, reading and the arts. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband in 2003.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Scott & Ann of Catawba, SC, their two sons, Andrew and Travis; son Brad and his ex-wife Donna and their daughter; Briana of Colonia, brother; Norb Adams; two nephews, Guy and Jeff and niece Cathy in Indiana.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 21st from 6 PM to 8 PM at the GOSSELIN FUNERAL HOME, 660 New Dover Road, Edison. A Blessing will be held on Saturday, March 22nd at 10 AM at the funeral home followed by committal service at Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery, Woodbridge.
