George Phelps "Phil" Sheller, 86, of Springfield and formerly of Illiopolis, passed away on Aug. 22, 2013 at the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1927 in Decatur the son of George W. and Nancy G. Phelps Sheller. He married Barbara L. Leigh on March 22, 1951 in East Lynn.
George was a lifelong farmer and drove the Illiopolis School bus
for 32 years. He was a member of the Illiopolis United Methodist Church, and past chairman of the church board. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Illiopolis American Legion Post and
was past president of the Riverside Cemetery Board.
He was preceded in death by his sister Natlie Carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Springfield; two sons, David Sheller, of Houston, Texas, and Dr. Donald Sheller (wife, Dr. Christine Kancius), of Morton; three grandchildren: Stephen, Scott, and Andy Sheller; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services took place Aug. 27 at the Illiopolis United Methodist Church with Reverend C.W. "Butch" Reneker officiating. Burial was conducted at the Riverside Cemetery at Illiopolis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Illiopolis United Methodist Church.
