APPLE GROVE — Lester Lorain Fellure, 92, of Apple Grove, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington following a short illness.
He was a 1941 graduate of Winfield High School. Following graduation, he moved Newport News, Va., and worked in the shipyards. Lester was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Navy on board the U.S.S. New Jersey for four years. After returning from service, he was employed by Ohio Apex in Nitro, and then Union Carbide Chemical Co., from which he retired with 32 years of service. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3466 in Charleston.
Lester was a Christian and member of the Mount Union United Methodist Church in Pliny. He began serving the church as Sunday School superintendent in 1951, and continued for 62 years, making him the longest serving in this office in the state. He also was the overseer for the Mount Union Church Cemetery. He was honored and surprised by his family and friends to be chosen as a WSAZ "Hometown Hero."
Born July 28, 1921, he was the son of the late Ercel Fellure and Edith Whitt Fellure. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Martin Fellure; a son, Bruce Fellure; brother Hoy Fellure; and sister Zeda Mae Ferguson.
Survivors include his loving wife of 27 years, Dortha J. Fellure; stepson Billy R. Steele, of Glenwood; stepdaughter Pamela (David) Jarvis, of Gallipolis Ferry; sisters Emma Hammond, of Eleanor, Hettie Hammond, of Pliny, and Avaline (Jim) Racer, of Apple Grove; grandsons Bruce (Charity) Fellure, of Hometown, Jeremy (Tiffany) Fellure, of Eleanor, Jacob Jarvis, of Gallipolis Ferry, Mandy Starkey, of Greenbottom, and Courtney (Matt) Hill, of Eleanor; and great-grandchildren Haydn Rule, Madison Rule, Ethan Fellure, Triston Fellure, Cameron Fellure, Braylon Hill, Coleton Hill, Gage Ryder and Gracelyn Fellure.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Mount Union United Methodist Church in Pliny with Pastor Mark Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Union Church Cemetery, with military graveside honors by James E. Marshall Post 187, American Legion, Winfield. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Raynes Funeral Home in Buffalo.
