Chakon, Sandra Irene*
EDWARDSVILLE — Sandra Irene Chakon, of Meyers Street, Edwardsville, passed away Sept. 24, 2016, at the Meadows Nursing Center in Dallas. Sandra was born on March 15, 1934. She always wished she was born two days later, loving St. Patrick's Day, attested by her shamrock tattoo she got for her 75th birthday. Sandra was the daughter of the late Wassil and Irene Sakolick. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Chakon, in 1997. Sandra graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1951 and from the General Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. Sandra worked the majority of her career in the General Hospital, retiring in 1996. Sandra was a member of the former St. Hedwig Parish in Kingston. She was raised in her youth as a member of St. John Russian Orthodox Parish in Edwardsville. Sandra truly enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed going to Atlantic City with her friends to the casinos, then to the local casino. She enjoyed watching her children play mini-football, Ed-Lark Little League and St. Hedwig's youth basketball and then high school and college sports. She absolutely truly enjoyed her grandchildren. "Nanie" loved watching them at school plays, horse shows, track meets and especially field hockey. She loved hearing our old stories about parties and races, that if we told her about them growing up, she probably would have killed us. She enjoyed her friends, the Loises, Irene, Stella, Rita, Aunt Kaye and Mary Ann. She really appreciated everyone who visited her when she really needed it. Surviving are her children, Michele Garen, of Bath, Michael J. Jr. (Nadine), of Dallas, Kenneth W. (Kerry), of Arvada, Colo.; grandchildren, Marc and Taylor Garen, Mikaila Irene Chakon, Alexandra and Nicholas Chakon. Sandra did not want an old wrinkly picture for her obituary. Funeral services will be held at the Kopicki Funeral Home; the service will be private for family and friends. Michael would like to thank Dr. William Boyle, the staff at the Meadows Nursing Center, especially Liz, TJ, Val, Lou and Mrs. B for caring to her needs and being a friend to her, you will never realize how much you helped her journey. Mom always told us "You sometimes act like you know what you're doing." Even though it almost got us arrested a few times. Sandra truly enjoyed her 82 years. She had a great gig! Donations can be made to Blue Chip Animal Shelter. No flowers please, Sandra said they only die and why waste the money? Hey, Dad, your 19 years of peace and quiet are over!
