California Wildfire Victims

Obituary

At least 81 people have died from three major wildfires burning in California. Firefighters are battling the Camp Fire in Northern California and the Woolsey Fire and Hill Fire in Southern California.

Most victims died in the Camp Fire, many in the town of Paradise. The town, with a population of 27,000 was destroyed by the fire. The Woolsey Fire, near Malibu, has claimed two victims.

2018 has seen multiple wildfires in California including the Panoche, Klamathon, Ferguson, Carr, and Mendocino fires. 15 people lost their lives from those fires.

The Camp Fire is one of the most destructive ever in California history with over 6,000 people losing their homes. The Woolsey Fire has also destroyed many structures including the homes of musician Neil Young and actor Gerard Butler.

Dry hot weather and Santa Ana winds that are conducive to fire development are expected to last through the week. Around 150,000 California residents are under an evacuation order.

Many firefighters and police officers who lost their homes in the fire continue to battle the blazes on the front lines.

Colusa Police Sgt. Jarrod Hughes told KTXL that his Paradise home had been destroyed but he was still going out there to fight the Camp Fire.

"It's my community, it's where I grew up. It's something I absolutely had to do," Hughes said. "There was no question about it. It was get my family to safety so I can get in and get back up there and help everybody else."

There are at least 100 people who are missing but officials are hoping that they left to stay with relatives or went to a shelter.
